NOTTINGHAM, England (Sept. 9, 2010)—Luxfer Gas Cylinders will introduce IOS™, its new easy-to-use, highly portable Intelligent Oxygen System, at the European Respiratory Society Annual Congress in Barcelona Sept. 18-22.
Ergonomically designed with input from clinicians, homecare patients and ambulatory oxygen users, IOS provides up to eight hours of oxygen therapy when used with a conserving device. Development was funded in part by a grant from the UK Department of Health.
IOS combines Luxfer’s patented SmartFlow® technology and patented, higher-strength L7X® aluminium alloy with advanced carbon composite cylinder technology to create a compact, lightweight package that is both aesthetically attractive and convenient to use. The discrete, highly integrated system offers reliable, effective therapy whilst encouraging active social lives and improving patients’ fitness levels and quality of life.
Exclusive SmartFlow® technology—which includes a patented, exceptionally efficient high-pressure valve-regulator and simple controls—provides excellent flow-rate stability and dependable oxygen output at any set pressure and any pressure supply. Output stability from 300 bar to set pressure in a single stage allows near-complete use of cylinder contents and a significantly reduced fill requirement.
Luxfer developed the system in partnership with the School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton, an innovative institution with strong links to the National Health Service and a global reputation for leading-edge research and development. Clinical research data collected during patient and clinician consultations provided key insights in the development of the new system. Also making valuable contributions to IOS development were BOC UK, Francis Kay, Graeme Maisey and Norgren.
With more than 40 million cylinders in service, Luxfer Gas Cylinders is the world leader in the development, manufacture and supply of aluminium and composite high-pressure cylinders for major global markets, including medical, life-support, beverage, fire and speciality gas applications.
