The European Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive (TPED) & Luxfer Gas Cylinders Ltd.

1) The TPED:

The TPED is a European Directive (1999/36/EC) that is intended to remove technical barriers to Trade within the EEC for certain types of Transportable Pressure Equipment & is linked to the ADR. It achieves this by ensuring that all relevant product entering the market place meet specified Design & Manufacturing & Testing requirements. This directive became a mandatory in the EEC 1st July 2003. From this date no Transportable Pressure Equipment that is covered by the TPED, with a few minor exceptions, can legally be put on The Market anywhere in the EEC, unless it conforms to the TPED & is Π Marked. The Π mark demonstrates conformity to the TPED. Unlike the PED, the TPED addresses Pressure Equipment as “Components” as opposed to “Assemblies”.

2) The Π Mark.

A cylinder that is shown to conform to the requirements of the TPED can be Π Marked. The Π mark, placed on the cylinder by or with the expressed authority of the TPED Notified Body, is the definitive final proof that a cylinder conforms to the TPED.

3) What is Included in the TPED ?

With respect to Gas Cylinders the following fall under the TPED requirements, all gas cylinders & Pressure & Safety accessories (eg: Valves), except the following :

  • Fire Extinguishers.
  • SCUBA Cylinders
  • SCBA Cylinders

These Gas Cylinders are covered by The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).

4) What does the TPED mean to You ?:

For you, our Customers the TPED will mean:

  • Ability to sell products across EEC boarders unhindered by national rules & customs.
  • A uniform inspection process through a single Notified Body.

5) The Notified Body :

A Notified Body is an inspection organisation that has been Audited by an approved & designated National Body , for example in the UK this is UKAS , to approve its competency in relation to the TPED. The Notified Body Registered as such with The European Commission’s Head Quarters in Brussels via the DTi. A Notified Body is a powerful agency that deems compliance, via a process known as Conformity Assessment, or otherwise of an item of Transportable Pressure Equipment. A Notified Body is universally acceptable throughout the EEC. A Member State cannot dictate which Notified Body it will accept.

6) How is Conformity to the TPED Achieved ?:

Conformity to the TPED is achieved by demonstrable compliance via a series of conformity “Modules”.

Luxfer have selected Modules B + D .
